Internet marketing terms can sometimes seem like alphabet soup, but here's one that can help you get cheap leads -- SEO. What is it and why should you care?
SEO stands for search engine optimization, and in plain English it means how do you get found by the people you're trying to reach? How can you position yourself to come up on the first page of Google when they're searching to solve a problem or to learn what you have to offer? Here are 3 critical secrets you must know and do:
Tip 1: You need your own site
First of all, you have to have a website that you control. You don't control the site that your company provides for you. Can you add content? Can you change things? Can you measure what's happening with your page? No!
Now your page does not have to be anything fancy, in fact, keep it simple. The simplest is a blog. I recommend a hosted WordPress blog, which is free but is under your total control on your domain name. Now you have a place to build up your good information targeted specifically at who you're trying to reach.
Tip 2: You need to focus on the right terms to attract the right people.
When people have a problem or something they want to learn about, they Google it! They're typing in all kinds of words and phrases, depending on what's most important to them, and you need to kind of get inside their head on this so you know what terms to focus on. You're going to provide good info online from your own experience and expertise, the search engines are going to find it and index it, and that's how people are going to find you when they search.
There are paid and free ways to do this research on finding the right terms. Naturally the paid solutions are faster because they integrate several functions, but let's talk about some of the free ways today. There are several great resources!
The Google Keyword Tool is awesome. You can put in a root keyword and get all kinds of other suggestions. Say your company has a product that's helpful for allergies. Just type in "allergies" as a start, and you'll soon see all kinds of other related terms that you can also research. Also use the free keyword tool at Wordtracker.com, and I like KWBrowse.com too for brainstorming.
Tip 3: Pick terms that aren't super competitive
The search engines have their own way of measuring what sites are most relevant for any keyword or phrase, and some phrases are just super competitive and take special knowledge that we teach about to rank for them. Start with something simpler when you're starting.
To use our allergy example again, you'll do better with something like "natural allergy relief" than trying to rank in Google quickly for "allergies." Even with the less competitive phrases, you'll want to know exactly how and where to use the terms to the best advantage.
